31 October - Biodiversity conference agrees raft of measures

Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity agreed a raft of measures at a major conference in Nagoya, Japan.

193 countries adopted the 'Aichi Target', a new strategic plan on biodiversity for 2011-2020, including a commitment to protect 17% of land and 10% of marine areas as nature reserves. The Nagoya Protocol' on access to genetic resources, which will enter into force in 2012, was also agreed.
