BROWN CREATES MINISTER FOR AFRICA, ASIA AND UN
As part of his Cabinet overhaul, Prime Minister Gordon Brown has named former UN Deputy Secretary-General Mark Malloch Brown to a new post: minister for Africa, Asia and the United Nations. Malloch Brown, who will be conferred a life peerage in order to take up the position, will not have Cabinet rank but will attend Cabinet meetings. Mark Malloch Brown was Deputy Secretary-General at the United Nations from February to December 2006. He was formerly head of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and Kofi Annan's Chef de Cabinet. He has also held positions at the World Bank and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency.
UNA-UK has for many years lobbied the government to create a Cabinet-level ministerial post with responsibility for the UN.
