2007/2008:

EARLY DAY MOTION 2315 ON THE UN CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD
Notes the Concluding Observation of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, which made 120 recommendations for how the Government can better protect the rights of children, and calls on the Government to address these issues and to fully implement the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in the UK. EARLY DAY MOTION 2138 ON THE RIGHTS OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
Welcomes the Convention and the Government's commitment to ratify it before the end of 2008, but urges the Government to ratify in line with the full aims of the Convention, in order to ensure the ending of inequality between disabled and non-disabled people by 2025. EARLY DAY MOTION 2086 ON THE CLIMATE CHANGE BILL (NO 2)
Calls on the government to strengthen the Climate Change Bill by including aviation emissions in carbon dioxide calculations, increasing the target for reducing the UK's carbon dioxide emissions from 60% to 80% and making it mandatory for large companies to report on their carbon emissions. EARLY DAY MOTION 2057 ON THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT
Celebrates the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute, believes that ending impunity for international crimes should be a priority for every state, calls on the international community to do more to assist the ICC and requests the Security Council to consider whether further referrals should be made to the ICC. EARLY DAY MOTION 2053 ON THE NUCLEAR SECURITY PROJECT

This EDM was co-authored by UNA-UK and BASIC. UNA-UK has written to all MPs urging them to sign the motion and to support the Project. The text is reproduced in full below:

That this House welcomes both the Nuclear Security Project, launched in the US by Henry Kissinger, George Schultz, William Perry and Sam Nunn, and its endorsement by Lord Hurd, Lord Owen, Lord Robertson and the right hon. Member for Kensington and Chelsea in a recent Times article; notes the encouragement to promote not only such dialogue but practical steps towards nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, both from Senators John McCain and Barack Obama; recognises the contributions made to these discussions by Ministers from governments, such as that of Russia as well as the UK; and calls on the UK Government to stimulate and support further developments which enhance the prospects for non-proliferation and a fresh drive for nuclear disarmament and commits itself to seek broad cross-party agreement on promoting this agenda.

EARLY DAY MOTION 1988 ON THE REFERRAL OF BURMA TO THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT

Condemns the Burmese regime's crimes against humanity and refusal to allow humanitarian assistance to the victims of Cyclone Nargis and calls on the UK to use its position within the UN Security Council to refer Burma to the International Criminal Court. EARLY DAY MOTION 1811 ON SANITATION AND THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Notes that, without serious action, the goal of halving poverty by 2015 will be missed by over half a billion people due to lack of sanitation and calls on the Prime Minister to support the Global Plan of Action on Water and Sanitation at the UN conference on the MDGs in September 2008. EARLY DAY MOTION 1794 ON WORLD REFUGEE WEEK

EARLY DAY MOTION 787 ON A GLOBAL MORATORIUM ON THE USE OF THE DEATH PENALTY

EARLY DAY MOTION EDM 736 ON THE CLIMATE CHANGE BILL

Welcomes the introduction of the Climate Change Bill to Parliament and the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP's) recent Human Development Report which described the Bill, but notes that UNDP warned that the Bill needed improving as its targets were not ambitious enough. EARLY DAY MOTION 602 ON CLUSTER MUNITIONS

Expresses concern that a number of countries that currently stockpile cluster bombs, including the United Kingdom, are seeking to water down a comprehensive treaty outlawing all cluster munitions by introducing an exemption for bombs that have self-destruct mechanisms, and calls for the UK government to instead work for a comprehensive treaty that will ban all cluster munitions. EARLY DAY MOTION 280 ON THE POST-2012 CLIMATE CHANGE FRAMEWORK
