Conservative MP for Faversham and Mid Kent, Shadow Minister for Sports and for the Olympics
Biography: Before entering Parliament, Hugh Robertson was an
army officer in The Life Guards. He saw service with
the UN in Cyprus (UNFICYP) after having served in
Northern Ireland, where he commanded a platoon in
Londonderry and Fermanagh. He served also during
the Gulf War as Adjutant of a main battle tank regiment and, in Bosnia,
worked for the United Nations in Sarajevo during the siege of the city.
He was selected as Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for
Faversham and Mid Kent in March 2000 and elected to Parliament in
June 2001. He was a Conservative Whip from 2002 to 2004 and became
Shadow Sports Minister in 2005. He was re-elected to Parliament in May
2005 when he doubled his majority.
Throughout his time in Parliament, Hugh has taken a close interest in
defence and foreign affairs. He was a special adviser to the Shadow
Northern Ireland Secretary and is now Shadow Minister for Sports and for
the Olympics.
