UN launches new website to assist those involved in resolving conflicts
The UN’s Department of Political Affairs (DPA) has launched an online mediation support tool for international peacemaking professionals called ‘UN Peacemaker’. The website is targeted at UN mediators and their staff but is also intended to serve as a useful resource for other bodies that are actively involved in conflict resolution, including national governments, regional organisations, civil society and non-governmental organisations. The initiative will help provide easy access to key resources such as past peace agreements and summaries of the processes that brought them about, as well as supplying links to expert sources of research and analysis on the issues involved. At the launch of the initiative at UN headquarters in New York, Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Ibrahim Gambari noted that, while each peace process is unique, similar issues repeatedly arise
|
“UN Peacemaker can help ensure that we are not reinventing the wheel. And, better yet, that we are not repeating mistakes.” |
Mr Gambari added that the new website is part of a broader push by DPA to place UN peacemaking on a more solid footing, as requested by member states during the World Summit in September 2005. |
