AID, DEBT and TRADE

As part of its bit to push for implementation of Millennium Development Goal 8, UNA-UK has joined The World Can't Wait, a diverse group of organisations calling on the world’s leaders to meet their commitments to end poverty. The group came together two years ago under the Make Poverty History banner and are determined to build on the work of this groundbreaking worldwide movement.

BACKGROUND

Two years ago, unprecedented public pressure led world leaders to make some big promises – to increase aid, and cancel many poor countries’ debts. However, two years on, 5,000 children die every day from drinking dirty water. More than five million people living with HIV/AIDS still do not have access to medicines.

So in 2007, the group is telling the rich countries that The World Can’t Wait - they must deliver on their promises and take decisive action against poverty and climate catastrophe.

TAKE ACTION ON 2 JUNE!

In June, Prime Minister Tony Blair will be heading to Germany to meet the heads of European governments and other nations that make up the G8, a group of eight of the richest countries in the world.

To send him off, the World Can't Wait is holding a massive event on the banks of the River Thames in London on Saturday, 2 June. The aim is to make sure that the message that The World Can't Wait is ringing in his ears. Wear white, bring your alarm clock or mobile phone alarm!

The day will also feature a host of workshops, stalls, activities, and debates held in central London. Click here to view a programme of events for the day, and here for a map highlighting the relevant locations.
