Conference Information

How can the Decade help make us more aware of and able to respond to the massive environmental challenges which threaten our future and how can we in the UK learn from it and contribute to it? How can it help our own efforts to promote sustainability in UK? Are there specific issues for the Devolved Administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland?

This Conference will be the UK Launch for the Decade, which will aim to:
  • Provide ESD practitioners, policy makers, civil society and the general public with an opportunity to discuss UNESCO’s ESD strategy;
  • Identify the UK’s contribution to the Decade and where it can add value to the Decade’s international strategy and how in turn it can help sustainable development practices in the UK;
Showcase relevant practices and polices of ESD practitioners, Government Departments, the Devolved Administrations, NGOs, civil society and the private sector.

Four seminars will address some of the key issues raised in the UNESCO Implementation Plan for the Decade and current educational priorities. They will be: Climate Change; Building Skills and Capacity for Sustainable Development; Culture and Community; and Communicating Sustainable Development.

The Conference will be chaired by Sir Geoffrey Holland, Chair of the Learning and Skills Development Agency and President of the Council for Environmental Education and Mr Doug Bourn, Director of the Development Education Association and Chair of the Education for Sustainable Development Working Group, Education Committee, UK National Commission for UNESCO.
