United Nations Youth & Student Association of the UK

Who are UNYSA?

We are young people (school, college and university students from across the UK) who form the youth section of the United Nations Association of the UK (UNA-UK) - an organisation founded in 1945, even before the UN itself was fully formed.

Our aim is to get young people more involved in global governance, and to foster greater awareness and understanding between people and cultures.

We share an interest in issues and concerns related to the United Nations such as: human rights, the environment, conflict prevention, health, sustainable development and education.

Youth Council

The activities of UNYSA-UK are overseen by the Youth Council, which is elected at UNYSA's annual conference. The Youth Council exsists to support, develop and coordinate the activities of braches and to provide a link between individual UNYSA members. It also runs national campaigns and events which individuals and branches can get involved with. The current Youth Council was elected at UNYSA-UK's annual conference in Warwick on 14th April 2007.

What do we do?

Our activities are divided between campaigning, educating and learning. We run nationwide campaigns on issues of importance. See our pages on Stop AIDS, Darfur, Debt Relief and the MDG Challenge for more information.

Our events enable us to learn more about the UN, to explore and discuss these issues and to meet with UN personnel.

We also have branches across the country organising local events for our members. And we are actively involved in arranging Model United Nations (MUN) conferences and other educational events

In 2005, UNYSA worked with the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to send three British youth delegates to the United Nations World Summit in New York. Click here for further details.

Following the success of this initiative, in 2007 UNYSA again worked with the FCO to send a youth delegate to the UN Commission for Social Development in New York. Click here for more information.

UNYSA-UK campaigns for the realisation of the Millennium Development Goals. We will be running a competition for UK universities to suggest improvements to British policy on the Goals. For more information, click here.

We also run occasional essay competitions. Click here to view past competitions.
