Trust-building in conflict transformation

10-11 September 2008

A conference jointly sponsored by Aberystwuth University's Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Contemporary Political Violence (CSRV) and David Davis Memorial Institute of International Studies (DDMI), which will examine the role of trust-building in conflict transformation, particularly as it relates to violent conflicts where actors have frequently employed terrorism as a contentious strategy.

'Shake Hands with the Devil' is the story of Canadian commander, General Romeo Dallaire, torn between his duty and his conscience when he finds himself eyewitness to hell on earth, leading the UN peacekeeping mission during the Rwandan genocide of 1993. It is based on Dallaire’s award winning book and directed by Roger Spottiswoode.

Rio Tinto Alcan Prize for Sustainability now open for entries

The Rio Tinto Alcan Prize was created to recognize the contributions of not-for-profit, non-governmental, and civil society organizations worldwide that are working to advance economic, environmental, and social sustainability. In addition to the US$1 million prize, nine grants worth US$15,000 each will be awarded to the short-listed NGOs to invest in one of three approved postgraduate courses. Information on eligibility criteria and how to enter the Prize is available at www.alcanprizeforsustainability.com. The closing date for receipt of entries is midnight, 12 September 2008 (GMT).

Recently listed by The Guardian as one of the "Fifty People Who Can Save the Planet", Ken Yeang of Malaysia, is the world's leading green skyscraper architect and one of the foremost eco-designers, theoreticians, and thinkers in the field of green design. Yeang's vision is to enable buildings to run as complete ecosystems with little external energy supply. He will explain his theory using case studies of his own buildings and city planning initiatives in Malaysia, Singapore and India.
