What was this?

On 15 July YPN's 'Working for Peace' initiative held a screening of 'Gaza: Reign of the Rockets' at Channel 4’s London studios.

What's the film about?

The film, part of Channel 4’s acclaimed Unreported World series, depicts the continuing conflict in the Gaza Strip. Travelling across Israel, Gaza and the West Bank, the film’s makers explore whether Hamas are achieving their aim of being a credible government despite Israeli assaults, a siege on Gaza, international isolation, and virtual civil war.

Who took part?

The event featured a discussion of the issues raised in the film with the film's director, Edward Watts, as well as Darrin Waller and Yossi Mekelberg. The discussion was chaired by Tim Llewellyn.

Darrin Waller has lived and worked extensively in the Middle East, leading "rights based" NGO's and civic networks with particular success in resource mobilisation, advocacy and capacity building. Previously Chief Executive of Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) a UK NGO working for the health of Palestinians especially in conditions of occupation, displacement or exile. Prior to this based in Gaza for two years during 2005/06 working for the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR). Darrin has championed broader equality and human rights issues both here in the UK and Middle East particularly concerning children's and disability rights.

Edward Watts has produced and directed six Unreported World documentaries for Channel 4, looking at stories in Gaza, Congo, Guinea Bissau, the West Bank, Bolivia and Japan. The films have investigated issues ranging from the growth of far right nationalism in Japan to atrocities committed in the Congo by surviving members of the Hutu militia responsible for the 1994 Rwandan genocide. He has recently completed a Channel 4 Dispatches entitled "It Shouldn't Happen to a Muslim". Broadcast on the anniversary of the London Bombings, the film investigated how prejudice and hostility against Muslims has grown in Britain since the July 7th terror attacks.

Yossi Mekelberg is an International Relations and Political Science graduate from both Tel Aviv University and Middlesex University. He is the Head of the International Relations and International and International Non-Governmental Organisations Department at Regent’s College where he has been teaching since 1996. Between 1994 and 1996 he was a visiting lecturer at King’s College, London, and more recently at Buckingham University. Yossi Mekelberg is also an Associate Fellow at the Middle East Programme at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House. His fields of interest are International Relations Theory, US Foreign Policy and International Relations and Revolutions. Among his research interests in the institute are: international politics in the Middle East, the Arab-Israeli peace process and the implications of the war in Iraq for the region. He is a regular contributor to the international Media on these issues and provides advice to companies and government officials from around the world.

Tim Llewellyn was the BBC's Middle East Correspondent and was based in Beirut during the civil war. He covered both Israeli invasions, in 1978 and 1982, and their aftermaths.
